The role of the author

What can you determine/understand about the writer of this text? He could be a soldier or someone who was involved in the war and is saying goodbye to many soldiers who he most likely knew the people who died in the war. At the bottom of the poem, it has his name of the author and the year it was written 1917. Which is the last year of world war 1 this shows it is most likely written by someone involved in the war. How detailed the poem it shows that he has lost people before. Most of the words in the poem shows that the  author is most likely religious as he states the words a lot in the poem as religious like
